Maine Foliage Guide
Share Post:

It may still feel like summer in some parts of the state, but here in Maine, fall has officially arrived! The air feels crisp, pumpkin spice is back at Dunkin’, and the trees are just beginning to blush with color. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a full-on foliage adventure, Maine offers some of the most breathtaking fall views in all of New England. We’ve rounded up our favorite routes, cozy stops, and hidden gems to help you make the most of this beautiful season—whether you’re here in person or enjoying it from afar.

When Fall Arrives in Maine

You can sense fall before you even see it. The mornings are cooler, the nights come a little earlier, and there’s that faint woodsmoke scent in the air that every Mainer knows. In Downeast towns, the traffic slows as summer tourists head home, and locals finally get to enjoy the quiet beauty that follows.

Pumpkin patches are opening, apple orchards are in full swing, and folks are pulling out their sweaters. To help you plan, the state offers an official Maine Foliage Report with weekly updates on color changes across every region. Peak colors usually stretch from late September through mid-October, so plan accordingly—this is when Maine really shines.

Foliage Day-Trip Ideas

If you’re looking for a single-day fall adventure, Maine’s scenic byways are the perfect way to explore. From coastal cliffs to mountain lakes, every turn offers postcard-worthy views.

Along Route 1

For a classic coastal drive, hop on Route 1 in Brunswick and follow it all the way to Lubec, the easternmost point in the United States. This stretch offers a perfect mix of ocean views and fall color.

Stop at Pemaquid Point, Owl’s Head, and Quoddy Head lighthouses—each one offers a different perspective of Maine’s coastline. While you’re at it, wander into the local gift shops and cozy cafés along the route. There’s something about sipping a hot coffee with a sea breeze and red maple leaves swirling around you that just feels right.

Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway

If you prefer the mountains to the ocean, the Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway is a must. This route winds through lakes, forests, and rolling hills that explode with color every fall.

Be sure to stop at the Height of Land overlook—it’s one of the most breathtaking views in the state. Bring your camera, a thermos of cider, and maybe a flannel blanket. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a moose wandering near the treeline.

This region feels like stepping back in time—quiet, peaceful, and untouched. It’s easy to see why it remains a local favorite for Sunday drives and family picnics.

Western Maine Mountains

Another stunning fall drive runs from Fryeburg to Bethel. This route winds through the western mountains, where vibrant reds and golds blanket the hillsides.

If you plan your trip right, stop at the Fryeburg Fair (October 2–9), one of Maine’s oldest and largest agricultural fairs. Or take a chairlift ride at Sunday River to see the foliage from above—it’s a view you won’t forget.

These small towns are filled with charm—cozy inns, antique stores, and local diners where the coffee is always hot and the pancakes are as big as your plate.

Stay a Little Longer

If you can linger a few days, fall is one of the best times to slow down and savor Maine. The busy summer crowds are gone, but the weather is still perfect for exploring.

Head Downeast to Machias, Lubec, or Cutler—quiet coastal towns where the pace of life slows just enough for you to truly take it in. Walk the Cutler Bold Coast Trail, visit West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, or wander through Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge for some serene autumn hiking.

When you’re ready to refuel, stop at Helen’s Restaurant in Machias for homemade pie or Narrow Escape Coffee Bar in Lubec for a cozy latte with a view. For fresh, local flavor, West Branch Farms in Machiasport is a can’t-miss stop.

If you’re planning a longer stay in southern or central Maine, explore towns like Rangeley, Bethel, Camden, Rockland, Millinocket, and Greenville. Each offers its own slice of Maine life—beautiful trails, great food, and friendly faces.
