Acadia National Park is one of Maine’s greatest treasures. While many visitors stick to the popular spots like Cadillac Mountain and Jordan Pond, there’s so much more to explore here. As a local Maine blogger, I want to share some unique things to do in Acadia National Park that will give you a fresh and memorable experience.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’re a seasoned traveler, these hidden gems and lesser-known activities will make your trip stand out.

Watch the Sunrise from Less Crowded Spots

Most people head to Cadillac Mountain to catch the sunrise, and while it’s breathtaking, it can get crowded fast. Instead, try watching the sunrise at quieter places like Otter Cove or Hunter’s Beach. These spots offer stunning views of the sky lighting up over the water, but with far fewer people around.

Plus, the sound of the waves crashing adds to the peaceful atmosphere. Make sure to bring a warm jacket and some coffee — mornings in Maine can be chilly! Climb the Beech Cliff Ladder Trail for a Thrill

For a detailed guide on the best sunrise spots, visit the National Park Service sunrise page.

Climb the Beech Cliff Ladder Trail for a Thrill

If you want an adventure that most tourists don’t know about, the Beech Cliff Ladder Trail is perfect. This short hike includes climbing metal ladders bolted to the cliffs near Echo Lake. It’s a bit challenging but totally worth it for the incredible views over the lake and ocean.

Just be careful if the rocks or ladders are wet, and bring sturdy shoes. This is a great way to feel like a true explorer in Acadia National Park.

Bike the Carriage Roads During Off-Peak Times

Acadia’s carriage roads are famous for their beauty and history. Instead of riding during the busy midday hours, try biking early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds are smaller. You might even spot wildlife like deer or foxes along the way.

One of my favorite routes starts at Eagle Lake and loops to Jordan Pond. Don’t forget to stop for a popover at the Jordan Pond House or pack a picnic to enjoy by the water.

Explore the Wild Gardens of Acadia

Near the Sieur de Monts entrance lies the Wild Gardens of Acadia, a quiet and beautiful place where you can learn about the park’s native plants. It’s a peaceful walk through different habitats — from rocky mountain plants to marsh flowers.

This spot is usually less busy, making it perfect for anyone who loves nature and wants a calm, educational experience.

Go Tidepooling at Wonderland and Ship Harbor

At low tide, Acadia’s rocky coastline reveals hidden tide pools filled with starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and other fascinating creatures. Wonderland and Ship Harbor are two of the best places to explore these tidal ecosystems.

Be sure to check the tide schedule before you go, and always watch your step to avoid slipping. Remember to leave everything exactly as you found it, so others can enjoy the tide pools too.

You can find tide charts for the area on the Maine Tide Charts website.

Paddle Kayaks for a Different View

Seeing Acadia from the water is a unique experience. Kayaking around Bar Harbor or Long Pond lets you explore hidden coves and cliffs that you can’t reach on foot. Sometimes, you might even spot seals or porpoises swimming nearby.

If you don’t have your own gear, many local outfitters rent kayaks or offer guided tours, which are great if you’re new to paddling.

For rentals and tours, visit Acadia Kayak Adventures or check out local outfitters in Bar Harbor.

Stargaze at Seawall for a Dark Sky Experience

Acadia National Park is an official Dark Sky Park, which means it has some of the best stargazing on the East Coast. Instead of the popular Cadillac Mountain, try heading to Seawall Campground or Sand Beach at night.

Bring a blanket and lie back to watch the stars. On a clear night, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye — it’s a magical experience you won’t forget.

Final Thoughts

Acadia National Park has so much more to offer beyond the typical tourist trail. Whether it’s climbing ladders on a cliff, paddling through quiet coves, or simply watching a peaceful sunrise away from the crowds, these experiences will make your visit to Acadia truly special. So next time you visit, try something new — you might just discover your own hidden favorite place in Acadia National Park.
